How to Choose a Straw Cowboy Hat

Start with the weave. Shantung is fine and smooth. Bangora is firmer and usually costs less. Palm leaf is thicker and sturdy, and raffia is a softer natural fiber. For summer cowboy hats in real heat, look for a vent crown or a ventilated weave that lets air through.

Measure your head and check the size guide before you order. Many product names list the brim and crown size, and brims here run from 2.75 to 4.5 inches.

Straw Hat Care

• Pick the hat up by the brim. Pinching the crown can crack the straw.
• Do not bend or crush it, and keep it away from heavy moisture.
• Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth.
• Store it in a cool, dry place with the brim supported.

What do the Xs mean on a straw cowboy hat?

The X is a quality grade set by each maker. Within one brand a higher number means a finer grade, but the scales differ between brands, so compare X numbers within one brand only.

Can straw cowboy hats get wet?

A little rain will not ruin most straw hats, but soaking can soften the straw and change the shape. Let a damp hat dry on its own, away from direct heat.

When do you wear a straw cowboy hat?

Straw is the traditional warm-weather hat, and felt takes over when it cools down. In hot places such as Arizona many people wear straw for much of the year.
