Exotic Cowboy Boots, Skin by Skin

What makes a boot "exotic" is the hide on the foot. Every skin looks, flexes and ages in its own way, so the best pair comes down to how you plan to wear it: every day with jeans, at a wedding or rodeo, or as the one pair you keep for twenty years. Use this quick guide to compare the skins we carry, then shop men's exotic cowboy boots or women's exotic cowboy boots.

Skin How it looks How it wears Best for
Full quill ostrich Raised quill "bumps" across the vamp Softest exotic, breaks in fastest, very breathable Everyday wear, first exotic boot
Python Overlapping diamond scales Light and flexible; scales lift if dried out, so condition often Statement looks, concerts, nights out
Crocodile & hornback Squared belly tiles or ridged back scales Structured and dressy, slower to break in, holds shape for years Weddings, dress wear, an heirloom pair
Pirarucu (arapaima fish) Large layered scales with natural color shifts Tough, scuff-resistant and flexible Rugged daily wear with a one-of-a-kind look

Caiman vs. Crocodile vs. Alligator Boots

These three get mixed up constantly, and the difference matters for price and wear. Alligator is the softest and most expensive of the three, with smooth, rounded belly tiles. Crocodile (including Nile croc) has slightly squarer tiles and a small pore dot in each scale, and sits just below alligator in price while wearing a little stiffer. Caiman is the most affordable of the family: its scales are bonier and more rigid, which gives a rugged, heavily textured look. Hornback cuts — from any of the three — use the ridged back of the animal instead of the belly, for the boldest texture you can put on a boot.

Genuine Exotic vs. Exotic-Print Leather

Genuine exotic hides are never identical, so the scale or quill pattern on your pair will be slightly different from the photo — that is the proof it is real. Exotic-print boots are cowhide stamped with a scale pattern: the look for less money, with the easy care of regular leather. Each product page lists the exact material so you always know which one you are buying.

Buy Exotic Boots Online With Confidence

Buying a $500 boot online should feel as safe as buying it across the counter. Here is how we make that true:

  • Free U.S. shipping over $100 on every pair, and we ship worldwide.
  • 30-day returns — if the size is wrong, send them back or swap for the right one.
  • Real fit help before you order: call or text 602-885-6438 with your usual size and brand, and someone who fits exotic boots on customers every day will tell you exactly what to get. Our size guide covers the basics.
  • A real store behind the website: we fit these same boots in person at our shops in Tempe and Old Town Scottsdale, Arizona — so you are ordering from people who handle these skins daily, not a dropshipper.

How Exotic Boots Should Fit

  • Instep: snug, like a firm handshake. This is what holds the boot on your foot.
  • Heel: a slight lift of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch when you walk is normal and settles in as the sole flexes.
  • Toes: room to wiggle. A wide or broad square toe gives the most space; a snip or narrow square toe runs sleeker.
  • Stretch: ostrich gives the most over time. Crocodile and pirarucu barely stretch, so choose the fit you want on day one.

Exotic Boots Without the Crazy Price

Genuine exotic cowboy boots at big-name western stores often run $1,000 to $2,700 a pair. Because we buy direct and keep our lineup tight, most of our genuine exotics land between $389 and $600, python cowgirl styles start at $249, and even our handmade R. Watson full quill ostrich and genuine crocodile boots stay well under what comparable skins cost elsewhere.

Caring for Exotic Leather

  • Brush off dust after wearing with a soft horsehair brush or dry cloth.
  • Condition every one to two months with a reptile or exotic-safe conditioner; work it into ostrich quills with your fingers.
  • On python and other scaled skins, always wipe in the direction the scales lay, never against them.
  • If they get wet, stuff with paper and let them air-dry away from heaters, fans and direct sun.
  • Store upright with cedar boot trees to keep the shaft and vamp in shape. Find brushes and conditioners in our hat & boot care collection — add one to your order so your boots ship with everything they need.

Exotic Cowboy Boot FAQ

Are exotic cowboy boots worth the price?

If you will wear them often, yes. Genuine exotic skins are tough, hold their color and take a resole, so a well-kept pair can last for decades while looking better with age.

How much do exotic cowboy boots cost?

Genuine exotics typically run from around $400 to well over $2,000 depending on the skin. At Last Rodeo, python cowgirl boots start at $249, most genuine exotics are $389 to $600, and our top-end Old Gringo ostrich boots are about $1,133.

What if the boots I order online don't fit?

Send them back within 30 days for a return or exchange for the right size. Even better: message or call us at 602-885-6438 before you order and we will size you right the first time.

What is the most comfortable exotic boot?

Full quill ostrich. It is soft, breathable and molds to your foot faster than any other exotic.

What is the most durable exotic boot?

Pirarucu and crocodile are the hardest-wearing. Ostrich is close behind and more forgiving to break in.

What is the difference between caiman and crocodile boots?

Caiman scales are bonier and more rigid, with a heavily textured look and a lower price. Crocodile tiles are smoother and more flexible, cost more, and dress up better.

Can I wear exotic boots in the rain?

Light rain is fine if they are conditioned. Avoid soaking them, and dry them slowly at room temperature if they get wet.

Do you ship exotic cowboy boots?

Yes. We ship across the United States and internationally, with free U.S. shipping on orders over $100.
