Western outfit for an Arizona rodeo

What to Wear to a Rodeo in Arizona: Outfits for Rodeo Scottsdale, Tucson, Prescott & More

Arizona is rodeo country. From the Tucson Rodeo in February to Rodeo Scottsdale in March and the summer rodeos up in the high country, there is a rodeo on the calendar most months of the year. The big difference from other states is the weather: a February afternoon in Tucson, an August night in Payson and a July day in Prescott call for very different outfits. This guide breaks it down event by event.

The Arizona rodeo outfit formula

  1. Boots you can walk in. Rodeo grounds mean dirt, gravel and long walks from parking. Broken-in cowboy boots beat new ones every time.
  2. A hat that fits the season. Straw for hot, sunny days. Felt for cool evenings and winter.
  3. Breathable layers. Desert temperatures can swing 25 degrees or more from afternoon to night.
  4. One statement piece. Fringe, turquoise, an embroidered boot or a trophy buckle.

Tucson Rodeo (La Fiesta de los Vaqueros) — late February

One of Arizona's largest pro rodeos, held at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds (February 20–28 in 2027). Days are usually mild and sunny, while mornings and evenings are cool.

  • Jeans, a western shirt and a denim or suede jacket you can tie around your waist by noon.
  • A straw hat for day performances, or a light-colored felt if you are staying into the evening.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses. The Tucson sun is strong even in February.

Rodeo Scottsdale (Parada del Sol) — early March

Rodeo Scottsdale at WestWorld (March 4–7 in 2027) is the big one for the Valley, and it brings out the best-dressed crowd of the year. Expect bachelorette groups, locals and visitors all dressed to impress.

  • Women: a western dress or flare jeans, embroidered cowgirl boots, a concho belt and a fringe jacket for the evening. Turquoise jewelry is always right in Scottsdale.
  • Men: a pearl snap shirt, dark bootcut jeans, square toe boots, a leather belt and buckle, and a felt or straw hat depending on the time of day.
  • Planning to hit the Old Town bars after? Our Scottsdale store is at 7072 E 5th Ave, right in Old Town, so you can grab a last-minute hat or boots on the way.

Cave Creek Rodeo Days — late March

Cave Creek Rodeo Days (March 24–26 in 2027) has a more laid-back, small-town feel. Think real ranch style over fashion:

  • Work-style boots, jeans, a plaid or snap shirt and a well-worn straw hat.
  • A vest or light jacket for the dances at night.

Prescott Frontier Days — around the Fourth of July

Prescott Frontier Days bills itself as one of the oldest rodeos in the world. Prescott sits at a higher elevation than Phoenix, so summer days are warm but nights are comfortable.

  • A ventilated straw hat is a must for day performances.
  • Lightweight short sleeve western shirts and breathable denim.
  • Red, white and blue details for the holiday weekend.

Payson Pro Rodeo — August

Payson calls its August rodeo the World's Oldest Continuous Rodeo. Monsoon season means heat, humidity and the chance of a sudden storm.

  • Straw hat, breathable shirt and boots you don't mind getting muddy.
  • A packable layer in case the evening storm rolls through.

The Hondo Rodeo Fest — November, Phoenix

A newer addition to the calendar, the Hondo Rodeo Fest takes over Chase Field in downtown Phoenix November 13–15, 2026, with a street festival, a Million Dollar Rodeo and big-name concerts. We wrote a full guide: what to wear to The Hondo Rodeo Fest.

Straw or felt? A quick Arizona rule

Straw from roughly spring through summer and for daytime events. Felt from fall through winter and for night events. If you only own one hat in Arizona, a quality straw gets the most wear. Compare them in our straw cowboy hats and felt cowboy hats, and read our felt vs straw guide.

Always double-check dates

Rodeo dates change from year to year. Check each rodeo's official website for the current schedule and tickets before you plan your trip.
